Seven Same-Keyboard Two-Player Games, Compared by Keymap

Seven two-player games here that share one keymap family, with their exact Player 1 and Player 2 key layout, which one to hand a beginner, and how the designers avoided key collisions.

The whole list, and one number they nearly all share

Seven games here share one two-player keymap family, and they are the set worth lining up side by side: Catch a Fish Obby, Steal Brainrot Eggs, Obby Toilet Line, Snow Rider Obby Parkour, Escape School Duel, Obby Rainbow Tower and Steal Brainrot Arena. Six of the seven run at exactly 960x600. Only Steal Brainrot Arena differs, at 900x506.

That shared resolution is not a coincidence. 960x600 is a comfortable 8:5 frame that holds a split view or a shared arena without either player’s half becoming a letterbox, and it fits inside a browser window on a laptop without scrolling. If you are setting up two people on one machine, that is the shape you will be looking at all evening.

Player 2 lives on the right hand side of the keyboard

Every one of these games assigns Player 1 the WASD cluster and Player 2 the arrow keys, then hands each player the action keys physically nearest their movement hand. Player 1 gets Space, Left Shift, E and F. Player 2 gets keys from the J-K-L-M-I-O-P block, which sits directly left of the arrow cluster on a standard full keyboard.

The important practical fact is that six of the seven use L as Player 2’s jump. Catch a Fish Obby, Steal Brainrot Eggs, Obby Toilet Line, Escape School Duel, Obby Rainbow Tower and Steal Brainrot Arena all do. The single exception is Snow Rider Obby Parkour, which puts jump on K and uses L for the camera instead. If Player 2 keeps dying in one specific game after a smooth run through the others, that swap is almost certainly why.

Sprint is less consistent. Player 2 sprints with J in Catch a Fish Obby, Steal Brainrot Eggs and Obby Toilet Line, and with K in Escape School Duel and Obby Rainbow Tower. Snow Rider has no sprint at all, because you are on a board and momentum is the game.

The two heist games share a keymap exactly

Catch a Fish Obby and Steal Brainrot Eggs use identical layouts: Player 1 moves with WASD, jumps with Space, buys or steals with E, hits with F or left mouse, and sprints with Left Shift; Player 2 moves with the arrow keys, jumps with L, buys or steals with O, hits with K and sprints with J. Learn one and you have learned both, which makes them the natural pair for an evening - one is a fish-tank raiding game, the other an egg-hatching economy, but your hands do not have to relearn anything.

Obby Toilet Line runs a compressed version of the same shape and doubles up functions: Player 1’s Space both jumps and skips a place in line, F swats bugs, E interacts; Player 2 uses K to skip and interact, L to jump and hit bugs, J to sprint. One key doing two jobs is what lets a five-key layout carry an idle economy and a platformer at once.

How the collisions were avoided

Steal Brainrot Arena has the deepest keymap here, and it is also the clearest example of a designer working around the shared-keyboard problem. Player 1 gets Space, Left Shift, F or left click, E, R for the market, T to teleport to base and Y to rebirth. Player 2 gets L to jump, K to sprint, M to buy, steal or sell, I for market, O for teleport and P for rebirth - a complete mirror of Player 1’s verb set on the other hand.

Two of Player 1’s bindings are explicitly marked as single-player only: moving with the arrow keys, and the G, H and J gift screens. Both would collide with Player 2’s territory in a two-player session, so the game simply switches them off rather than overlapping them. That is the correct fix, and noticing it tells you the two-player mode was designed rather than bolted on.

Which to hand a beginner

Count Player 2’s keys. Escape School Duel asks for four in total - arrow keys, L to jump (pressed twice for a double jump) and K to run - and Obby Rainbow Tower asks for the same four with sprint on K and a double jump on L pressed twice. Those are the two to start someone on.

Steal Brainrot Arena asks Player 2 for seven distinct keys plus movement, and it expects them to manage an economy at the same time. Save it for a second session.
